Jake Gyllenhaal set to play the villain Mysterio in Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel
Jake Gyllenhaal is gearing up to bring a little mystery to the Spider-Man franchise, as he is currently in talks to play the Marvel villain Mysterio in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Spider-Man creators, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, introduced Mysterio in the comics in 1964 so it's probably about time he's given a spot in the movie. Mysterio aka Quentin Beck is special effects expert who uses his skills to create elaborate illusions to commit crimes and to fight Spider-Man.
Jake Gyllenhaal appears to be the perfect man for the role given previous connection with Spider-Man. The Hollywood Reporter said:
The original Spider-Man star, Tobey Maguire, injured his back while shooting Seabiscuit in between Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, and Gyllenhaal was briefly considered to take over the role if Maguire could not resume his duties.
Obviously Tobey Maguire did return to work and Jake never got his chance...until now. Funnily enough, the filmmakers even put a joke about Spider-Man hurting his back in the sequel. I didn't mind Tobey as Spider-Man but Tom Holland is most definitely the perfect choice for today's Spider-Man. Stan Lee said so himself.
Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is set to open July 2019.
