You'd be forgiven for never having heard of England's Irie. The song had the misfortune of being recorded for the same tournament as Three Lions, which went on to become the de facto anthem for Euro 96 and every other English disappointment since.
The Black Grape tune was decent though, and the presence of Joe Strummer on backing vocals automatically elevates above anything David Baddiel, Frank Skinner or yer man from the Lightning Seeds could ever hope to put their name to. Check this Top Of The Pops performance (it reached number six in the charts you know).
Anyway, twenty years on Ryder's back for another stab at soundtracking the summer, alongside fellow Black Grape vocalist Kermit, producer Paul Oakenfold and Goldie, of dentistry fame. The song's called We Are England and this is the official video.
Not bad at all.
