I dunno about you but I'm getting a bit tired of the endless amount of superhero-based movies and TV shows out at the moment. Thankfully it looks like we're about to get something fresh and new thanks to Amazon turning Lord of the Rings in to a billion dollar TV show.
As of yet, we don't know who's being cast but sir Ian McKellen has expressed interest in playing Gandalf. It would certainly make sense to have the original Galdalf appear in the TV show, but ho know, maybe the producers want to go in a different direction and change up the cast all together.
While no one knows yet if Gandalf, Frodo or Legolas will make an appearance in the series, Amazon have just confirmed that the show will focus on a young Aragorn, who was played by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson's LOTR film's. While Amazon are keeping shtum about the show at the moment, reputable LOTR fan site The One Ring just tweeted this:
From the first press release, we know this so-called LOTR series will NOT be a retelling of the events of the War of the Ring. Instead, it will be Appendices based and cover a lot of time and history. This is the greatest advantage the show runners have: that so much of Tolkien’s storytelling, even just in ‘Appendix A’, covers a tremendous swath of time.
Starting with a young Aragorn, narrative allows connections to his Numenorean bloodline and to the founding of Gondor. The fabric of Aragorn’s story is just so rich.
Ordinarily I wouldn't take a fan site as gospel but these geeks really know their shit. I'll be looking forward to catching this when it's released. Hopefully having a billion dollar budget will mean it's seriously fucking epic!
